Chapter 14 - Lance
Having anticipated having to work without a secretary for the next few days (at least), Lance was surprised when he walked into the office the next morning to find Kayla awaiting him with his usual coffee and morning reports.
âGood morning, Lance,â she said, smiling as she handed him both. Though she acted normal, there was a hint of worry in her gaze that he might have missed had he not known what had happened the night before.
âGood morning, Kayla,â he responded, taking the coffee and reports. âHow are you this morning?â
He watched her expression closely.
âI am well, thank you for asking. And you?â
There was too much politeness in her voice. Her smile was too wide. It unnerved Lance more than he would ever care to admit.
The way she glanced sideways made Lance follow her gaze. When he noticed Lewis at his desk just inside the door of his own office, Lance knew why she was trying her hardest to act normal. Yes, his son knew about her ex, but what he didn't know was that last night he and Kayla had crossed a line. In fact, they had crossed more than one.
âCan I see you in my office for a moment?â Lance asked, knowing that the second he closed the door behind them the soundproofing he'd installed would minimize any werewolves listening in. So long as they kept their voices down, anything they said was between them.
Kayla didn't look entirely convinced and she glanced at Lewis again as if she thought he might begin to show an interest.
âThere's no need to look so scared,â Lance said, forcing laughter in an attempt to act as he ordinarily would. âI just want to go over a couple of e-mails I need you to handle for me.â
The plausible excuse appeared to ease the tension in Kayla's shoulders. âOf course, sir. Lead the way.â
âAfter you,â Lance insisted, gesturing for her to go ahead.
As soon as she turned and stalked into his office, Lance wished he hadn't encouraged her ahead of him. The way she walked, how her hips swayed from side to side, was maddening. He had to bite his lip to stop from grabbing her buttocks right there and then.
Blinking his eyes shut, he remembered being inside her the night before, and his groin heated almost painfully.
âWhat e-mails do you need a hand with?â Kayla asked, skirting around his desk to power up his computer. Lance watched her, his eyes never leaving her as he kicked the door shut with his heel.
The clicking sound as it shut caused Kayla to straighten up where she had been leaning over his desk.
âLance?â she looked at him questioningly, eyebrow raised.
âYou and I both know I do not want to talk about e-mails,â Lance said, voice low. He narrowed his eyes at her and stalked across the room. âHow are you really?â
He slipped around the desk and gripped hold of her upper arms, rubbing them gently when he felt just how cold she was.
Kayla gulped, and when she spoke there was a clear lump in her throat.
